On September 1st 2017, the disaster known as Hurricane Harvey hit the state of Texas. Hurricane Harvey is one of the worst disasters to hit Texas since Ike in 2008 and the strongest since 1961 when Carla hit that area. The effect of this storm is devastating to hundreds of thousands of people who have literally lost everything but the clothes on their backs.
Are you prepared if disaster strikes? Sometimes there is no warning at all and your family may not be together when disaster strikes. For this reason it’s is vital that you have a plan in place so that the whole family knows what to do in an emergency. You should start by putting together the essentials for a supply kit such as;
* Water, food, a can opener, pet food. If you have a baby; formula, diapers, and wipes. Don’t forget to include blankets, extra clothing, shoes, a radio, your phone, a charger, and a flashlight with extra batteries, etc. Whatever you may need to get you through a few days.
* Medications, eye glasses, and a first aid kit.
* A box with important papers such as insurance coverage, your ID and extra cash. Important documents and photos can also be stored in a cloud or other locations so that you can have them at your fingertips if you need them.
* Have a plan on how to contact each other if you are separated and include a safe place to meet up.
Your needs may change through each year so you need to update your kit from time to time and replace any expired items as needed. Keep your kit where you can just grab it and go if you need to evacuate to a new location. Don’t wait until the last minute to have a plan in place.
At times of disaster everyone wants to help. There are many organizations asking for donations however, before you donate be sure the organization is legitimate. The Better Business Bureau is a good place to start.
